How Often Should You Bathe Your Dog This Summer?

Updated: Aug 14

Summer is a fantastic time for you and your furry friend, full of outdoor adventures and fun in the sun. However, with the increased activity and heat, it’s crucial to keep your dog clean and comfortable. As a proud member of our Texas Howdy Doodles family, we want your Bernedoodle or Sheepadoodle to look and feel their best. But how often should you bathe your dog during the hot summer months?

Bathing Frequency

Generally, you should bathe your doodle every 4-6 weeks. This frequency helps maintain their coat’s natural oils while keeping them clean. However, during the summer, you might need to adjust this schedule based on your dog’s activity level. Here are a few considerations:

  • Outdoor Activities: If your dog loves swimming, hiking, or playing in the dirt, you might need to bathe them more often to remove dirt, allergens, and chlorine.

  • Skin and Coat Type: Bernedoodles and Sheepadoodles have different coat types that might require varying care. F1 doodles (first generation) tend to have wavier coats, while F1b doodles (backcrossed with a poodle) often have curlier coats. Curly coats might trap more dirt and require more frequent grooming.

  • Health Concerns: If your dog has skin conditions or allergies, consult your vet for a bathing schedule that suits their specific needs.

Summer Grooming Tips

In addition to regular bathing, there are several grooming tips to keep your dog comfortable during the summer:

  • Brush Regularly: Brushing your dog a few times a week can help prevent mats and tangles, especially in breeds with curly or long coats. It also helps distribute natural oils and keeps their coat shiny. For everyday brushing, I highly recommend this brush. It's perfect for maintaining your doodle's coat. And if you want that freshly-groomed, fluffy look, this fluffing brush is a game-changer—though it’s a bit pricey, it’s worth every penny!

  • Check for Pests: Summer is peak season for fleas and ticks. Regularly check your dog’s coat and use preventative treatments as recommended by your vet. I personally prefer using topical treatments over oral medications. Fleas live on the outside, so I find it better to treat them externally. A great option is Wondercide Natural Flea & Tick Control.

  • Keep Them Cool: Dogs can overheat quickly in the Texas sun. Ensure your dog has access to shade and fresh water at all times. Consider using a cooling mat or vest on particularly hot days. Consider using a cooling mat like this one on particularly hot days.

Fun in the Sun

Summer is also a great time to engage your doodle in activities that keep them both entertained and cool:

  • Water Play: Many dogs love water. Set up a kiddie pool in your backyard or take trips to dog-friendly swimming spots. This keeps them cool and gives them plenty of exercise.

  • Early Morning or Late Evening Walks: Avoid the midday heat by walking your dog in the cooler parts of the day. This helps prevent overheating and burnt paw pads from hot pavement.

  • Frozen Treats: Make DIY frozen treats using dog-safe ingredients like yogurt, peanut butter, and fruits. These can help keep your dog cool and happy.

At Texas Howdy Doodles, we believe in providing premium care for your new puppy. By following these summer care tips, you can ensure your Bernedoodle or Sheepadoodle remains happy, healthy, and comfortable all season long. Remember, bringing home a Doodle means you’re bringing home the best of the best, and that includes top-notch care and attention to their needs.
